Cindy S. Shu has over 10 years of experience focusing her practice exclusively on intellectual property law.

Experienced in worldwide IP portfolio management, Cindy regularly represents domestic and international companies in connection with strategic IP planning and positioning in both a domestic and global setting.

Cindy’s practice often involves all aspects of planning and prosecution of patent applications in technological areas including pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, chemical, biomedical, and mechanical inventions. Particularly, she has expertise in the field of chemicals, pharmaceuticals and biotechnology, having had significant experience on both the technical side and the legal side. Cindy also regularly attends industry conferences and events. As a result, Cindy is familiar with many issues of particular importance to businesses in these industries.

Cindy also provides strategic, freedom-to-operate, invalidity, and infringement opinions, as well as due diligence prior to acquisition of IP rights to identify potential problems such as patent validity or enforceability problems, or other factors that may impact patent claim scope. She also has experience with the prosecution of reissue applications and interference procedure before the USPTO Patent Trial and Appeal Board.

Cindy has extensive experience working with domestic as well as European and Asian companies, which make up the majority of her client base. She travels regularly to Europe and China, and is a native speaker of Mandarin Chinese, and can understand and speak basic Spanish.

Before practicing law, Cindy worked as a chemical process engineer at E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Company, and subsequently as a pharmaceutical process and validation engineer at Pfizer, Inc.

As an active member of the New York Intellectual Property Law Association’s Programs Committee and Young Lawyers’ Committee, Cindy writes and speaks on a variety of intellectual property law topics.
