Eric Alvarez concentrates his practice on high-stakes, complex commercial litigation in both state and federal court.  He represents businesses of all shapes and sizes—from closely-held partnerships to international corporations—as well as individuals, in a wide range of litigation matters, including general commercial litigation, consumer fraud, partnership/shareholder disputes, products liability, and mass tort litigation.   Eric handles and coordinates multi-jurisdictional cases through all stages of litigation, up to and including trial.

Eric understands that every litigation is unique, as are the parties involved in it.  He approaches each case focused on achieving the best possible result for his client based on that client’s individual objectives and goals.

Eric is also a member of Norris McLaughlin’s Cannabis Law Group. He advises clients on compliance with state and federal laws and regulations relating to production, research, and testing of cannabis and cannabis-derived products such as cannabidiol (“CBD”).

Prior to joining Norris McLaughlin, Eric worked at an Am Law 100 firm, where he was a team member of the New Jersey Law Journal’s 2015 Products Liability Litigation Department of the Year.

Eric came to Norris McLaughlin to better serve the companies and individuals in his local community.  A resident of Somerset County, Eric is active in the local bar association.  He maximizes his “Big Law” experience and better serves his client’s needs with Norris’ depth and breadth of experience, nimble market position, and focus on assisting businesses and individuals in the local community prosper.

  • Successfully drafted and argued a motion to dismiss four out of five claims against mortgage servicing client, including claims of fraud and rescission under the Truth-In-Lending Act.
  • Drafted successful motion in limine which ultimately led to eliminating the plaintiff’s strict product liability claim against an international telecommunications company.
  • Successfully defended a pro bono client in a parole revocation hearing.
  • Prevailed on motion protecting correspondence between counsel and corporate client’s independent contractor as privileged attorney-client communications in construction defect litigation.  The decision is the first known in New Jersey state court to address the issue, agreeing with various federal courts and other out-of-state cases.
  • Obtained summary judgment on behalf of precision equipment company in breach of contract action brought by a former employee alleging entitlement to additional benefits/compensation.
  • Drafted brief successful in obtaining summary judgment in favor of higher education institution under the New Jersey Tort Claims Act.
  • Drafted brief successful in dismissing, with prejudice, consumer fraud claims against corporate defendant and its principals in a lawsuit involving corporate acquisition.
  • Successfully defended commercial real estate developer against consumer fraud, breach of contract, and breach of fiduciary duty claims brought by former business partners alleging misappropriation of corporate assets in failed real estate development and subsequent sale, obtaining voluntary dismissal of all claims.
  • Obtained dismissal for international electrical construction management firm and parts distributor for claims that the company had fraudulently inflated its invoices on various construction projects.
  • Advised a higher education institution about the current state of the law regarding medical marijuana and hemp research, as well as potential partnerships with Alternative Treatment Centers (“ATCs”) under New Jersey’s Compassionate Use Medical Marijuana Act (“CUMMA”).
