Risa Chalfin is a trial attorney, focusing her practice on complex commercial litigation matters. She handles all aspects of litigation from inception through appeal before state, chancery, and federal courts.
Risa is a trusted advocate for her clients. She has extensive experience in matters arising from partnership and shareholder disputes, including breaches of fiduciary duties, real estate litigation, motor vehicle franchise disputes, restrictive covenant disputes, contractual claims, construction defects, probate litigation, and guardianships.
Risa’s approach to litigation and conflict resolution, informed by her extensive experience as a trial lawyer, enables her to guide clients to the most efficient way to resolve disputes. Risa regularly works with clients on matters from the initial pleading stage of litigation through resolution. In the New Jersey Appellate Division, she handles cases from briefing through argument.
In addition, Risa often speaks for CLE seminars sponsored by the New Jersey State Bar Association, Middlesex County Bar Association, and Trial Attorneys of New Jersey. Prior to joining Norris McLaughlin, Risa practiced at a large, multi-disciplinary firm in New Jersey. She was a member of the firm’s Political Contributions Committee, advising members and clients on the implications of contributions according to local and state pay-to-play ordinances. Risa served as a law clerk to the Hon. Glenn Berman, Chancery Division of the New Jersey Superior Court, from 2011-2012. During her term, Judge Berman presided over the highly-publicized State v. Ravi trial, which addressed the issue of bias intimidation and cyberbullying of Rutgers University students. While attending law school, Risa interned for the Hon. Barry T. Albin, Associate Justice of the New Jersey Supreme Court; New York County Defender Services; and the National Football League.
Actively engaged in the legal community, Risa is a Trustee of Trial Attorneys of New Jersey, and served as a Trustee of the Middlesex County Bar Association from 2013 to 2020. Involved in her alumni network, she interviews prospective students for the University of Pennsylvania. Risa enjoys running, reading, the New York Yankees, and the Oregon Ducks.
