Allentown, PA (October 7, 2011) – Matthew R. Sorrentino, a Member of Tallman, Hudders & Sorrentino, the Pennsylvania office of Norris McLaughlin, P.A., will be honored at a special event hosted by the Communities In Schools of the Lehigh Valley (CISLV) board of directors at Melt in Center Valley, Pennsylvania, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 20, 2011. In a special presentation by Shelly Brown, President and CEO of the State Theatre Center for the Arts, and Don Cunningham, Lehigh County Executive. Sorrentino will be recognized for his commitment to CISLV and his leadership as President of its board of directors. “I am flattered to be honored by CISLV. CISLV is an organization dedicated to making a positive impact on the lives of young people in our local schools. CISLV’s ability to array services around at-risk youth to ensure that they graduate from high school not only benefits these young people personally, but also benefits our community at large by ensuring a stable, educated workforce into the future,” says Sorrentino.
Communities In Schools (CIS) is the nation’s largest dropout prevention organization. Dropouts from the class of 2008 will cost the nation more than $300 billion in lost wages over the course of their lifetimes. CIS provides and/or coordinates services that address the underlying reasons young people become dropouts. The organization leverages community resources to reach out to at-risk students while they still are in school. Through one-on-one relationships with caring adults, each individual’s needs are assessed, and connections are made between school and community resources. CIS focuses on addressing the issues that fall outside of academia, but significantly impact each child’s schooling as well as overall quality of life: like anger management, employment training, substance abuse, and gang intervention, for example. In the Lehigh Valley, CIS provides services to more than 2,900 students.
Sorrentino focuses his practice on health care, business, and real estate law. A member of the firm’s Management Committee, he currently serves as Lehigh County Solicitor, managing a staff of 18 full- and part-time staff attorneys for the county.
Sorrentino has served as lead counsel in numerous real estate and commercial acquisition transactions involving institutional health care providers. He has led the development and implementation of Lehigh Valley’s major health care joint ventures, including MRI centers, ambulatory surgical centers, and several medical office buildings.
Early in his career, Sorrentino was lead defense counsel for various municipalities, handling several seminal cases before the appellate courts in the development of Pennsylvania’s Municipal Subdivision Tort Claims Act.
Sorrentino serves as general counsel to Lehigh Valley Health Network, the region’s largest health care provider and employer. He also serves as general counsel to: Health Network Laboratories, a regional clinical laboratory with annual revenue in excess of $100 million; Lehigh Valley Physician Group, a multi-specialty, nonprofit physician practice more than 700 physicians; and Anchor Health Properties, LLC, a national developer of innovative facilities dedicated to health and wellness. Sorrentino and his wife currently serve as Co-Chairs of the President’s Society of Lehigh Valley Health Network.
Sorrentino has been selected as one of the Pennsylvania Super Lawyers for 2010, in the Health Care section, an honor he has received for the past five years.
He earned his J.D. from Villanova University and his A.B. from Muhlenberg College.
