  • Jun 07, 2019Annmarie Simeone Elected Nominations Co-Director of NJWLA

    Annmarie Simeone, a Member of law firm Norris McLaughlin, P.A., has been elected Nominations Co-Director of the New Jersey Women Lawyers Association (NJWLA) for the 2019-2020 term. She will, among other things, oversee the NJWLA’s nominations and elections, and be The Executive Board’s liaison with the Nominations Committee.

    Simeone has been actively involved in the NJWLA for over ten years. She served as Immediate Past President of the NJWLA, 2018-2019; President, 2016-2017; Vice President, 2015-2016; Chief Financial Officer, 2014-2015; Secretary, 2013-2014; Co-Chief Operating Officer, 2010-2011; Co-Director of the Women’s Leadership Resources Committee, 2008-2010; and Chair of the Women’s Initiative and Leaders in Law Gala, 2011-2013.

    Simeone concentrates her practice on labor and employment counseling and litigation.  She primarily defends management in claims made by employees under state and federal employment laws, including whistleblower claims and claims alleging harassment and discrimination based on race, gender, religion, national origin, and disability.  Simeone’s work includes the defense of corporations, as well as individual officers, directors, and employees, addressing issues unique to small businesses, and challenges faced by larger companies.  She also provides advice and counseling to human resource professionals and in-house counsel on employment issues including employee leaves of absence, workplace investigations, employee discipline, and layoff and termination issues, including the negotiation and design of severance agreements.  Simeone drafts employee handbooks and employment-related policies and procedures, and has significant experience protecting businesses from liability by conducting training for supervisors and employees.

    In 2019, she was elected as a Trustee of the Middlesex County Bar Association; in 2018 she received the Presidential Leadership Award from the NJWLA; in 2016, she received the Professional Lawyer of the Year Award from the New Jersey Commission on Professionalism in the Law; and in 2013, she was named Outstanding Woman in Somerset County in the area of Law by the Somerset County Commission on the Status of Women. Simeone received her J.D. from Seton Hall University School of Law in 1993, and her B.A., summa cum laude, from St. John’s University in 1990.

  • May 14, 2019Norris McLaughlin Attorneys to Speak on Food and Beverage Law

    Danielle M. DeFilippis, Rashmee Rayna Sinha, Stephanie S. Spangler, and Michael J. Locke, of law firm Norris McLaughlin, P.A., will present “Food Law 101,” a food and beverage panel discussion, for WeWork Food Labs. The event will take place on Thursday, May 16, 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m., at WeWork 148 Lafayette Street in New York.

    The presentation will cover a variety of legal issues encountered by food and beverage startups. DeFilippis will discuss basic contract issues that arise between food and beverage companies and external and internal parties. Sinha will cover key labor and employment law issues and updates for startup companies in the food and beverage industry. Spangler will speak on intellectual property issues that food and beverage companies face in the operations of their company, and Locke will speak on corporate formation, governance, and equity issues that are commonly faced by startups and early-stage companies.     DeFilippis, Co-Chair of the firm’s Intellectual Property Law Group and founding member of the Food, Beverage & Hospitality Group, focuses her practice on intellectual property matters and litigation. She represents individual and corporate clients in all phases of litigation, from commencement through trial, and regularly serves as lead counsel in cases before federal and state courts, the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, and alternative resolution forums. She has represented clients in a variety of industries, most notably, food and beverage, liquor, jewelry, and cosmetics.     As a logical, strategic, and pro-active employment defense attorney, Sinha has a proven track record of extricating clients from suit in the early stages of litigation. She primarily handles claims under Employment Practices Liability Insurance, Directors and Officers and Errors and Omissions polices related to discrimination, harassment, retaliation, failure to accommodate, whistle-blower, and wrongful discharge on the basis of protected categories (i.e. age, sex, disability, race, gender, national origin, religion, pregnancy etc.).

    Sinha represents employers from industries including healthcare, construction, financial services, property management, insurance, technology, transportation, building services, hotel and hospitality, retail, manufacturing, power and energy, and pharmaceutical.

    Sinha is experienced in all areas of employment litigation in both federal and state courts. She has defended administrative proceedings and regulatory compliance investigations before numerous employment practice agencies including the EEOC, and the federal and state Department of Labor and the Department of Health. Sinha counsels employers on employment and compliance issues including employment policies, contracts, discipline, terminations, leaves of absence, accommodations, complaints, investigations, benefits, proprietary information, restrictive covenants, reorganizations, and executive compensation.

    Sinha is a member of the Labor of Employment Section of the American Bar Association and the New Jersey State Bar Association.     Spangler, Co-Chair of the firm’s Cannabis Law Group and a member of the Food, Beverage & Hospitality Group, focuses her practice on trademark and copyright litigation, prosecution and enforcement.  She appears in state and federal courts and before the USPTO’s Trademark Trial and Appeal Board in opposition and cancellation proceedings.  She counsels clients in industries including startups, technology, food and beverage, cannabis, and arts and entertainment.  She is a co-author for the firm’s trademark, copyright, and unfair competition law blog, More Than Your Ma®k, and the firm’s Cannabis Law Group blog, Legally Grown.

    Locke focuses on providing counsel to small businesses in all phases of their corporate existence, from formation through merger and acquisition. Locke also works closely with clients as they grow and expand their businesses, offering advice and legal guidance in connection with customer and supplier agreements, terms and conditions of use (for both physical and digital products), inter-business relationships (including joint ventures), export regulations, securities regulations, litigation support, and more.

    Patrick T. Collins, a Member of law firm Norris McLaughlin, P.A., and Chair of its Labor & Employment Law Practice Group, will present “Managing Evolving Employment Issues with Limited Resources” on Thursday, May 9, 5:30 – 7:00 p.m., at Dassault Falcon Jet Corp. in Little Ferry.  He will discuss wage and hour issues; paid sick, family, and disability leave; workers compensation; #MeToo issues; anti-harassment training; social media in the workplace; handbook updates; the proposed overtime rule changes; the NJ Pay Equity Law; and New Jersey’s new minimum wage.

    A resident of Branchburg, Collins practices labor, employment, and personnel law on behalf of employers and management. He is experienced in all areas of litigation in both federal and state courts, defending discrimination and sexual harassment claims, wrongful discharge and whistleblower suits, and claims brought under the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Family and Medical Leave Act and the multitude of other civil rights and anti-discrimination laws. In addition, Collins represents parties in breach of contract claims, and in actions involving unfair competition, restrictive covenants, and confidentiality agreements.

    Collins has appeared before state human rights agencies throughout the country, as well as the EEOC, the National Labor Relations Board, and various wage and hour agencies. He has represented employers in numerous labor grievance/arbitration proceedings, and in a variety of other matters relating to the unionization of employees and collective bargaining. He has also worked extensively with employers on public works contracts to ensure compliance with prevailing wage laws.

    Much of Collins’ practice concentrates on counseling employers in making workplace decisions that will reduce or avoid entirely the risk of litigation. Collins regularly counsels his clients on matters concerning independent contractors and contingent workers, employment policies, employee discipline and terminations, reductions in workforce, and plant closings. He has conducted sexual harassment investigations and employment law audits, as well as drafted numerous employee handbooks and substance abuse and workplace privacy policies. He has also conducted management and employee training and legal compliance sessions in a variety of areas, including the performance appraisal process and anti-harassment.

    Collins is a member of the American Bar Association, the New Jersey State Bar Association, and their Labor & Employment Sections, as well as the Somerset County Bar Association. He sits on the Board of Directors for the Legal Services of Northwest New Jersey and is a former member of the Supreme Court of New Jersey’s District XIII Ethics Committee and the Sidney Reitman Employment Law Inn of Court.  He also serves on the Somerset Valley YMCA Advisory Board.

    Collins received his J.D., cum laude, from Seton Hall University School of Law in 1983 and his B.S. from Glassboro State College in 1979.
