Commercial Construction & Renovation Magazine Features “Industry Perspective”

A lot has been said and written about the changing landscape of commercial construction during the COVID-19 global pandemic: everything from the type and size of projects now undertaken, delayed, canceled, or reimagined, to the disruption within the workforce (including a dearth of skilled trade/construction workers), to the challenges all these issues pose to contractors and developers as they struggle to achieve some semblance of recovery.

Challenges Related to COVID-19 Quarantine/Reporting Requirements

As recent reports have highlighted the high positivity rate infecting the construction industry, we reviewed the recommendations and requirements imposed on the industry by mandatory reporting and quarantine protocols for a recent “Industry Perspective” article in the November 2020 issue of the Commercial Construction & Renovation magazine. In an effort to stop the spread of the coronavirus, federal, state, and local governmental entities have implemented numerous recommendations and requirements, that all businesses must adhere to, such as mandatory quarantine and reporting requirements. These recommendations and requirements, which are in a state of flux, pose additional challenges to the construction industry and are amplified by the risk of non-compliance, worries about contract breaches, and the uncertainty surrounding COVID-19.

Many of these challenges and governmental regulations are likely here to stay for the foreseeable future. The construction industry should devise plans to keep track of and implement the protocols necessary to adhere to the changing regulations so that they can efficiently run their businesses while complying with the new COVID-19 requirements to avoid unnecessary downtime, possible closure of the business, and added expense.

    Construction Industry Perspective on COVID-19

It is clear that COVID-19 will continue to make an impact on the construction industry. During these uncertain times, making sense of the various rules and regulations for businesses in the construction industry, while also making smart business decisions, can be very complicated. In some cases, the wrong action or inaction could result in monetary penalties and other potentially disastrous consequences for a business. Accordingly, companies are advised to make an action plan and ensure that their business and employees are informed about and following the recommendations and requirements governing the construction industry.
