Bridgewater, NJ (November 3, 2010) – Joel N. Jacobson, a Member of the Bridgewater-based law firm Norris McLaughlin, P.A., has been named the 2011 “Newark Area Best Lawyers Banking Lawyer of the Year” by Best Lawyers, the oldest and most respected peer-review publication in the legal profession. He is the only banking law attorney accorded this honor in the State of New Jersey.
After more than a quarter of a century in publication, Best Lawyers is designating “Lawyers of the Year” in high-profile legal specialties in large legal communities. Only a single lawyer in each specialty in each community is being honored as the “Lawyer of the Year.” Best Lawyers compiles its lists of outstanding attorneys by conducting exhaustive peer-review surveys in which thousands of leading lawyers confidentially evaluate their professional peers. The current, 17th edition of The Best Lawyers in America (2011) is based on more than 3.1 million detailed evaluations of lawyers by other lawyers. The lawyers being honored as “Lawyers of the Year” have received particularly high ratings in surveys by earning a high level of respect among their peers for their abilities, professionalism, and integrity.

A resident of Chatham, Jacobson has been with the firm for 34 years, including more than 30 years as a shareholder. Jacobson has been a member of the firm’s Management Committee since 1986 and chairs the firm’s Marketing Committee. He earned both his J.D. in 1971 and his B.A., cum laude, in 1968 from the University of Pennsylvania.
Jacobson’s practice focuses on banking, real estate and corporate matters. He represents a large number of financial institutions in lending and litigation matters, including work-outs, foreclosures, bankruptcies and lender liability matters related to non-performing loans. He also represents a wide range of real estate and corporate clients in transactional matters.
Jacobson is a member of the New Jersey, New York and District of Columbia Bars, and the Real Estate, Banking Law and Debtor/Creditor Sections of the New Jersey State Bar Association. He has been the firm’s representative to Meritas, a worldwide affiliation of approximately 200 leading mid-sized commercial law firms, since 1991, formerly serving on the Meritas Board of Directors and currently serving as Chairman of its Financial Services Section. He was also the Chairman of the Chatham Township Planning Board for the past five years.
