Danielle M. DeFilippis Speaks with Brad Muniz of SobelCo., LLC on the Importance of Brand Protection and Current Trends at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office
On September 28, 2021, Norris McLaughlin member and Co-Chair of the firm’s Intellectual Property Law Practice Group in New York City Danielle DeFilippis was a guest of Brad Muniz, partner of SobelCo, on SobelCo Insights. Brad and Danielle discussed the importance of protecting brands, for small and large companies alike, and the value of going through the clearance process not just for an identical brand but also for related goods and services.
As Danielle stated, companies should speak to a professional early on in the branding process, as an initial review by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office ("USPTOP) can be up to six months after filing. She explained that investing in your brand at the outset, including going through the clearance process and looking at related goods and services, pays off in dividends in the long run in terms of enforcement.
